Bringing in the month of love
As a family who practices minimalism, constantly editing what has made ( or is trying to make its way into our home) can make the holidays a little tricky. While we love to make memories with our kids and create traditions we also want to stay true to our mantra. Here are some ideas on how we decorate for Valentine’s Day and how we celebrate with our three tiny sweethearts.
One of the simplest ways to decorate is to add fresh roses. I opt for white or faint pink roses for a sweet touch to any counter top or coffee table. White roses feel so timeless to me and they make a statement without overwhelming the space. Some other favorites are peonies or blush hydrangeas. I also like to swap out photos in our frames for moments that nod towards the holiday. Check out our simple valentine photos we did here in our house. These are easy to replicate and you can take these with your phone, no fancy equipment needed.
Another simple and FREE way to add a touch of Valentine’s is to display art to your tv. YouTube has multiple screen saver videos, all you have to do is search valentine’s artwork for your tv, et voila! These images to the right are some vintage florals that I love to showcase on our tv. Again you can search vintage floral art for your tv to pull these up or screen saver videos similar to it. I like the idea of using our tv as art when not in use, might as well turn the black screen into a gallery.
Seasonal candles are also a simple addition, think heart shaped candles or simple blush candles. A few years ago when the budget was very small I would use Ikea candles in vanilla and just peel the label off, you can take a little chiffon or silk ribbon in blush and tie a bow around it. Ribbon is such a budget friendly DIY and a easy addition to seasonal decor, any season really, all you have to do is swap out the color of ribbon. You could smack a bow on just about anything to make it darling for the day or season.
Our daughters bunnies for example! Our oldest also has a bunny on her bed as well with blush bows tied to each ear. It was a big hit with our daughters. These bunnies were purchased years ago for easter, we have bunnies on display year round actually and don’t limit them to a specific season. We also put all of the kid’s valentine books, or books with the typical Valentine colors, on display in their reading nooks. If you don’t have a reading nook you can stack seasonal books on a side table for the same effect.
When it comes to family traditions, we love to make heart shaped pizza from scratch with pesto sauce on the day of and let the kids top off their heart pizzas with their favorite toppings. We usually pair this with a pomegranate italian soda garnished with strawberries and mint. If Pizza isn’t your thing you can also bake anything into heart shapes, have fun with the options and enjoy the month of love!
